Kim Sloan

Class of: 2021

Hometown: Hot Springs, Arkansas

Major: Learning Sciences, minor is Computer Science

Why I Chose Northwestern:

I wanted to be near Chicago, I love the color purple, and the campus felt like home when I visited.

Campus Activities and organizations:

Chapin Humanities Residential College (President, 2018-2019), Associated Student Government

What I plan to do after graduation:

Teach, then work in elementary curriculum/resource design with a focus on how technology is changing and impacting the learning process.

How being a WEAA Scholar has made a difference in my undergraduate experience:

Often at Northwestern I can begin to feel isolated or hopeless as a student from a low-income background but once a quarter, when I am able to meet with WEAA peers and mentors, I am immersed in resilience, support, and love. It reminds me so much that I am not alone, that there is hope, and that many powerful women have gone before me and made beautiful impacts on the world around them.

At a more monetary level, WEAA has been the reason I could pay for my textbooks, the reason I could take off work during finals week to study, and the reason I was able to make the down-payment to sign my lease for my current apartment. This organization has provided so much more fiscal stability than I’d have otherwise.

“The Woman’s Educational Aid Association has been one of the greatest resources in my time at Northwestern.  I love the community within the WEAA organization, and I am so grateful to be part of it.”  Kim, ‘21
